The client wanted a traditional cottage inspired garden to match their efforts on a refurbishment of this old coaching inn. The garden was in need of attention after the builders completed their work. The client wanted a low maintenance garden that still packed plenty of colour and had useable surfaces for all year round use.
We responded with a design that was cottage inspired but respectful of the contemporary interior finish, meaning the closer the garden gets the house the more contemporary the feel of the surfaces, planting and features. This allowed the client to have a raised area, which served as an extension of the kitchen diner and the lower garden an expression of a cottage garden style.
We also installed a greenwall/vertical garden in this garden, which afforded a plain white privacy wall a new lease of life.
Overall this garden created two usable zones; the raised terrace allows the client all year round use of the outdoor space, while the soft planting and edges of the lower garden means there’s a changing seasonal aspect that can be enjoyed in different ways throughout the year.
